Turner and Local Landscape Inspired Abstract Collaboration – Clarke and Gartz

12 August - 17 August

The artists Pete Clarke and Georg Gartz at a previous exhibition

The gallery is very excited to be hosting two inspiring artists – Pete Clarke and Georg Gartz. The artists will be using studio space at the gallery in the week 12-17th August and then giving a presentation of the work produced at the end of that period – on Friday 17th August starting at 7:30pm. During their visit, they may be around in the gallery or out in the area around Barmouth.

Pete Clarke, Liverpool and Georg Gartz, Köln are artists who have made work together since the Liverpool in Köln ´Eight Days a Week` cultural festival in 1998. They share similar interests and concerns, to develop relevant contemporary painting, questions of authorship and expressive uses painting language. They decided it would be interesting to experiment and test their habitual conventions and practice by challenging each other through collaborative painting.

Clarke and Gartz discussed the relevance of Joseph Mallord William Turner, his use of research drawing, almost abstract water colour painting and the colour theory of Goethe to their collaborative practice. They decided then to embark on `Turner`s Travels` where Clarke and Gartz making work at the significant locations where Turner painted in the 19th Century. Clarke and Gartz first visited the Rivers Rhine and Mosel in 2007, Yorkshire in 2008, Venice in 2009, Isle of Wight in 2010 and Rheinland in 2013.

Turner had followed the Rivers Rhine and Nahe in 1844 making evocative paintings of the Rheingrafenstein and Ebernburg. Clarke and Gartz  completed a very productive ten week residency at the Künsterlerbahnhof, Ebernburg in 2015 exploring the distinctive `sublime´ landscape of the Rotenfels and the Rheingrafenstein. They could be seen making plein-air paintings by the River Nahe which they then developed into more ambitious experimental paintings for the exhibition.

Clarke and Gartz will continue their individual and collaborative project exploring the Welsh Landscape in August 2018. Gartz has recently completed a residency in Marrakesh, Morocco and Clarke has been selected for this year’s John Moores Painting Prize to be exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery Liverpool part of the Liverpool Biennial in July.
